Early election returns for Alameda County supervisor, Alameda County district attorney, and Contra Costa supervisor, with no incumbents in the mix.
OAKLAND — In very early returns Tuesday, Loren Taylor led a crowded field vying to lead the East Bay’s most populous city as incumbent Mayor Libby Schaaf leaves office, opening up opportunities for fresh leadership.
The race is conducted by ranked choice voting, which will take several rounds of tabulations to determine the next mayor. Voters can choose up to five candidates, ranked first to fifth. As the candidate with the least votes drops out, those votes are redistributed. Taylor, Thao and Reid are incumbent city council members in their first terms in office, while De La Fuente is a veteran who served two decades as a council member but has been out of politics since 2012.Labor unions have spent big to try and make Thao the next mayor. De La Fuente’s candidacy has received a major financial boost from backers of an embattled coal terminal at the city’s harbor, as well as a national realtors’ association.
As incumbent council members, both took policy actions aligning with the view that law enforcement was sufficiently funded, before reversing course to advocate for hiring more officers and funding new police academies.
