A Brinks Security Company guard shot a man after an attempted armed robbery in broad daylight in the Loop Wednesday morning, officials said.

About 11:19 a.m., a male armed guard for Brinks Security Company was exiting a business in the 0-100 block of South State Street when he was approached by someone who attempted to rob him, authorities said.
A struggle ensued and the security guard produced a gun and fired shots, striking the suspect.NBC Chicago spoke to the mother of the security guard, Anita Colon, who said she drove straight to the scene after her youngest son called her from Tennessee and told her that he saw information about the incident on the news.She said she told her son that she loves him, and she's"glad he's okay" when she saw him. A witness who asked NBC Chicago to conceal his identity said he saw the suspected robber running toward a CTA train stop near the intersection of Dearborn and Madison Streets."He had like, a money bag in one of his hands," the witness said."I guess he was trying to get away.""I just wanted to help, that's all," the witness said. The suspect was transported to a nearby hospital and was last listed in stable condition. Charges were pending, police said. No other injuries were reported. There was heavy police activity in the area for hours Wednesday afternoon, with police blocking off part of South State Street and West Madison Street and CTA trains rerouted during the investigation. An alert on the CTA website at 12:01 p.m. said trains on the Blue Line were bypassing the Washington stop"due to police activity."
