A 29-year-old woman in Seattle faces murder charges after allegedly beating her 14-year-old son to death with an extension cord over uncompleted chores. Police say the woman admitted to the assault, claiming it escalated during a disciplinary episode. The woman's attorney argued for her release citing her trauma and limited resources, but the judge set a $3 million bail.
A 29-year-old woman is in jail on suspicion of murder after telling police she cut and beat her 14-year-old son until he died because she was angry that he didn't do his chores. The woman called 911 around 2:15 p.m. Thursday from the family's home and reported her son went unresponsive while she was disciplining him. A Seattle police officer wrote in a report that the woman stated she was spanking him with an extension cord, and it went too far.
The report alleges the woman told investigators she shoved the son against the wall, and he struck his head, went limp, then fell to the floor. She continued to beat him while he was on the floor, the report states. She ordered him to stand, which he complied. She continued to beat him for approximately an hour. The woman told investigators she stopped the beating because the boy was unresponsive. At a bail hearing Friday afternoon, the woman refused to appear in court, but a public defender argued for her release from custody. “I know of the seriousness of these facts, but this also involves a mother losing her son and significant trauma she is experiencing from that,' attorney Zelena Jones told Judge Jill Klinge. 'I’d also argue there would be additional trauma on top of that if she is incarcerated. Given her limited history, the fact it appears she cooperated with law enforcement, and the fact that she has very limited resources, she should be released.” Judge Klinge sided with prosecutors who asked for a bail of $3 million. KOMO News is not naming the woman yet because she hasn't been charged. Prosecutors indicated in court they expect that to happen by Tuesday. The victim is only referred to in the police report at J.R., his full identity was not released in Friday's daily report by the King County Medical Examiner's Office
