Video clips shown by the government from inside the prison show several pistols and a heap of machetes and other bladed weapons that were found after the riot. According to some reports the brawl had broken out between members of rival gangs Barrio 18 and Mara Salvatrucha. Head of the country's prison system Julissa Villaneuva suggested the riot started because of recent attempts by authorities to crack down on illicit activity inside prison."We will not back down," Ms Villanueva said in a televised address after the riot.
