A light winter weather system is expected to bring freezing rain, sleet, and snow to Chicago on Saturday, posing travel risks. While the accumulation is not expected to be significant, caution is advised.

While the amount of freezing rain and ice anticipated is less than that observed during Wednesday night's ice event, any accumulation of ice can significantly affect travel. Precipitation is expected to be light and potentially intermittent. Any freezing drizzle or rain is likely to transition into sleet and snow in the afternoon before departing around or shortly after sunset. Snow and sleet accumulation is projected to be minimal, a dusting or less than an inch.

Determining the precise boundary between freezing rain and snow/sleet will be challenging as two segments of the jet stream converge from the north and south. It appears that areas situated south of Interstate 88 will have a higher probability of experiencing a thin layer of ice, while regions to the north are more likely to encounter sleet and snow. Additionally, areas south of Interstate 80 stand the best chance of experiencing temperatures above freezing for a couple of hours during Saturday afternoon. Regardless of the specific type of precipitation, Saturday's weather system, while not a major winter storm, warrants caution during both driving and walking, particularly in the morning and afternoon. It's crucial to remember that temperatures will persist below freezing until Sunday, meaning any untreated icy surfaces will remain hazardous. The area may at least witness some sunshine on Sunday, which can sometimes facilitate ice melt even when the air temperature remains below freezing.
