A respiration system is a stainless steel chamber with large doors and windows big enough to hold a cow or any other livestock animal.

Livestock account for 40 percent of methane emissions. In-depth study of the process is vital if these emissions need to be tackled.Researchers at the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences at Cornell University in the US have installed climate-controlled chambers to measure, verify, and monitor various methane and other gas emissions from the respiration process in cows.

With the world warming up faster than before, scientists are working to tackle greenhouse gases and, where possible, prevent them from being released. These measurements, taken every 2-10 minutes, are important in understanding cows’ energy use. On average, a cow loses six to seven percent of its total energy consumed to produce methane gas, and it digests carbohydrates.

Additionally, the chambers will also be used to improve the Cornell Net Carbohydrate and Protein System , software that can accurately calculate milk yield using data provided on feed and conditions in which cows are reared.
