Wheelchair tennis ace Kgothatso Montjane and sprinter Ntando Mahlangu are among the medal candidates who form the core of Team SA’s Paralympic squad that was announced
The two have been included in a team of 34 athletes who will represent the country – across seven sports – at the Paralympic Games, which will run from August 24 to September 5 in Tokyo, Japan – the host of the recently concluded Olympic Games.
Expectations are that the Paralympic team will bring home more medals than their able-bodied compatriots, who returned just three medals from the Olympics that concluded last weekend.Wimbledon finalist Montjane , is part of four wheelchair tennis players who will hunt for South Africa’s first medal in the sport at the Paralympics. Others are Mariska Venter, Evans Maripa and Leon Els. The quartet will compete in the singles and doubles events.
“I just want to aim for a medal – it doesn’t matter which colour – and after my performance at Wimbledon, I don’t see why it’s not attainable,” said Montjane ahead of her fourth Paralympic appearance. Meanwhile, the world’s eyes will also be on Mahlangu, who at 14 years old, won a silver medal in the 200m at his maiden Paralympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
