Monkey off his back as Bavuma relishes milestone | Temba Bavuma had the last laugh in the second innings of the second and final test in Johannesburg with a match-winning 172 runs this week
Temba Bavuma became the butt of a joke after he started his red ball Proteas captaincy when he went out for two ducks in both innings against the West Indies in Centurion last week.
Yesterday morning – day four of the test – the Proteas added 34 runs to their overnight total and they were dismissed for 321, setting the tourists a target of 391 to win the match and draw the series. But, thanks to Bavuma’s superb knock and Kagiso Rabada’s searing spell in which he ripped through the West Indies’ top order, the Proteas won by 284 runs to win the series 2-0.
As the years went by, Bavuma was demonised for his inability to score a second test hundred. Until this week, this was one of the most talked about issues at home and overseas. His detractors felt that seven years of waiting was reason enough for the specialist batter to be discarded. While that’s true, they did not talk about how Bavuma always walked on to bat at number five or six, with the scoreboard reading 20-something for three or 30-something for five.
