Mobile's mayoral race evolved into a nail biter as returns came in. By the end of the evening, less that 14-hundred votes separated the two candidates, out of nearly 50 thousand votes cast. Former district judge Spiro Cheriogotis edged out state representative Barbara Drummond in a hard-fought runoff to see who would replace current mayor Sandy Stimpson.

For many in the Stimpson administration, Cheriogotis' victory brought a sigh of relief, as he had already received the current mayor's support and endorsement. Following his victory, NBC 15's Darwin Singleton asked both Cheriogotis and Stimpson about how the mayor's staff may or may not change. "You know, I think that remains to be seen," stated Cherigotis. "There's no doubt we'll make changes. But I don't think Mobile is broken. And if it's not broken, don't try to fix it. But there are some things we need to improve on. " When asked if there any members of Stimpson's staff that should be concerned right, the mayor-elect replied: "Look, I want to meet with everybody that serves the city right now. I am going to find the people who are serving the city to their best ability. And from that, maybe not, I want to help them do that. I want to help them find the way forward so that they can be the servant that we need. And then if they can't be that, then we'll talk." "He's going to be the mayor," said current mayor Sandy Stimpson. "It's his deal. I will give him my advice just like you would give a son or brother and say, look, this is what worked for me. He'll have to figure it out. Because, you and I may get along, and I call that the chemistry. But it may not work for me and Darwin. So, he's got to figure that out. And so I'm gonna wish him the best and tell him what I think and who are the people who can really make things happen. You know, you've got a lot of people who are engaged and they're doing a good job. But when you get into a crunch, what you have is, you only have four or five people who can really turn the knob, turn the dial, you know, to push things forward."He's set to assume his new position as mayor on Monday, November 3rd.
