) - The Mobile County Commission has finalized its budget for next year, allocating over $221 million for various programs and services.
The largest chunk of the budget, nearly half at 47% will go toward public safety. This includes funding for the Mobile County Sheriff’s Office, the Metro Jail and the Strickland Youth Center. The second biggest category, taking up 38% is general government. This covers offices like the License Commissioner, Revenue Commissioner, and Probate Court.
“This year’s budget represents a nine percent increase over last year’s fiscal year budget,“ explained Director of Public Affairs, Sharee Broussard. For the fourth year in a row, money will also be spent to give workers a five percent cost of living raise. “They also absorbed a five percent insurance premium increase so that money was now passed on to the employees, and so they’re doing that as a concerted effort to attract and retain talent,” said Broussard.“Escatawpa {park} is open — but we’re adding more to it. Chickasabogue Park will be opening in the near future.
