Mobile city leaders say in order to appeal to other cruise lines and add a second ship, there needs to be more parking spaces for travelers.
"We've been approached by several different cruise lines, and that's one of the obstacles of having them come to Mobile and enjoy cruising is having that good parking spot next to the terminal," said Joe Snowden, Administrative Services Executive Director. Snowden says right now, there are 500 parking spots at the cruise terminal, and the city can only handle one ship at a time. He says they're looking at adding 750 spots. Snowden says the existing garage was built with the ability to expand vertically and add two levels. He says they're also looking at expanding the footprint toward the National Maritime Museum of the Gulf of Mexico.
"We do have one cruise line that is looking at potentially purchasing a ship in 2025, and they have looked at Mobile as one of their new ports. Now, we have other cruise lines that we have a few more years at 2027, they're looking at coming to Mobile. So we have some time to build that, that garage out for them if they choose to come," said Snowden.
Snowden declined to say which cruise lines are considering adding a ship in Mobile. Currently, Carnival sails Spirit seasonally. It resumed trips out of Mobile this past weekend.
