Major League Soccer on Wednesday announced it is launching a new MLS NEXT team in San Antonio for the 2024-25 season. AC River, which will operate out of Soccer Central San Antonio 's 82,000 square foot facility, will be one of eight expansion clubs joining the youth developmental league operated by MLS . “AC River's integration into MLS NEXT marks a pivotal moment in our journey, solidifying our commitment to excellence and innovation,” the club said in a statement.
“Inspired by the vibrant spirit of San Antonio, the river city, our club aims to flow with the same dynamic energy, carving new paths and creating unforgettable experiences for players and fans alike.” Launched in 2020, MLS NEXT was designed to serve as a 'platform for youth player development.' The league hosts four major events throughout the season including the Generation Adidas Cup, which features MLS academies playing against top international clubs in a week-long tournament.
