San Diego FC tabs Joaquin Escoto from IMG to oversee the youth academy being built in East County

The San Diego Football Club’s Right to Dream Academy is under construction on the Sycuan reservation in the eastern part of the county, scheduled to open in January. The man who will run it, however, is already in place. The MLS expansion franchise announced Wednesday it has hired Joaquin Escoto as executive vice president for SDFC as well as the Right to Dream Academy. He most recently led IMG’s Global Football in the Americas division.

It also, notably, created a free scouting program to identify the nation’s top Hispanic players. “The Right to Dream Academy in San Diego will change soccer in the United States,” Escoto said in a club release, “giving top talent the opportunity to develop their academic and athletic potential in a fully-funded residential program, the first of its kind in North America. … We are excited for the future.” Right to Dream was created in Ghana by former Manchester United scout Tom Vernon.
