This weekend's yard jobs include enjoying the preview of spring-flowering shrubs that are blooming now, dealing with excess lanternflies, and assessing evergreens that have yellowing needles (note: that's usually normal this time of year).

It's not unusual for spring-blooming shrubs to open a few sporadic flowers prematurely in fall, especially when a warm spell follows a cold one.

This fakeout doesn’t harm the plant, but any flower buds that open in the fall won’t be available to bloom again in spring. If your yard is the scene this fall of adult lanternflies so numerous that they’re piling up like rugby scrums, don’t panic. For another, lanternflies do mainly cosmetic and temporary feeding damage to plants. With the exception of grapes, hops, and possibly young trees, these pinky-sized gray bugs with the orange wings don’t cause serious or lasting plant harm.

See Penn State Extension’s lanternfly management guide for details on how to install wildlife-safe sticky bands If you’re dead set on spraying, insecticides labeled for lanternfly control include beta-cyfluthrin, bifenthrin, carbaryl, zeta-cypermethrin, malathion, neem oil, and natural pyrethrins, according to Penn State Extension.

A second possible explanation is that even needled evergreens lose their older, inner needles. Some do it heavier and in a more pronounced way than others, especially following a stressful growing season.
