Traditional climbing rose varieties actually only bloom once a year, but new varieties bloom again and again and deserve a spot in your garden.
Climbing roses have a reputation, just like most roses, for being difficult to grow. Climbing roses are not a vine and won’t climb without some help. They have flexible canes that can be trained to grow around arbors, pergolas, and fences. Although this may sound like extra work, it’s a nice perk, because these plants can be grown as informal shrubs along a chain link fence or to keep nice and tight on a trellis along a small pathway.
The flowers featured in this week’s Garden Guide are part of Proven Winner’s trademarked “Rise Up” series. These plants are shorter than typical climbing roses and are repeat bloomers. They have been growing at Atlantic Nursery off of Atlantic avenue in Freeport, NY for less than 2 years and have already reached a nice size. Some are nearly thorn-less!Some climbing rose varieties can grow to massive proportions. They’ll give a pop of color and spread a beautiful fragrance across the yard.
