Mistrial declared in election misconduct felony case of former Anchorage lawmakerANCHORAGE, Alaska - A hung jury resulted in a mistrial Monday in the election misconduct case involving former East Anchorage lawmaker Gabrielle LeDoux.State prosecutors
When she took the stand last Wednesday, LeDoux said it was her understanding that two of the people named in the charge - her close friend Lisa Simpson and her son Caden Vaught - were living in temporary residences with the plan to return or move to permanent residences in District 15 in time for the 2018 elections.
During her questioning of Ledoux last week, prosecutor Jenna Gruenstein stated that the criteria for establishing residency for voters in Alaska are very specific. As a result, neither of them could claim District 15 as their residence at that time. When she was on the stand Wednesday, LeDoux said it was her understanding from talking to Simpson that Vaught was going to live with them once he left the military academy, and that was why she urged Simpson through a series of text messages to have him registered to vote in her district.
However, Gruenstein argued that residency is not “aspirational” and brought up that Simpson and her husband were not living in the triplex in House District 15 as of December 2018.Gruenstein argued that LeDoux and Simpson were close friends with a long history, mentioning that Simpson was her chief of staff as a lawmaker and worked on her election campaign.
