Mississippi’s first medical apprenticeship program celebrated a major milestone Friday with a graduation ceremony at Pascagoula’s Performing Arts Center.
PASCAGOULA, Miss. - Mississippi’s first medical apprenticeship program celebrated a major milestone Friday with a graduation ceremony at Pascagoula’s Performing Arts Center. Friends and family filled the auditorium to honor dozens of students who completed 16 months of hands-on training and classroom work.
For many graduates, the day was more than just a ceremony. “Man, this is one of the best days of my life,” said Delissa Shannon, an LPN apprentice. “It feels so good. I know I graduated high school, but that was when someone else told me what to do,” said surgical tech apprentice Brittany Murch. “This time, I did this for myself — and I am so proud.” The program, run through Singing River Healthcare Academy, gives students the chance to earn a paycheck while gaining experience and certification. Shannon said that option made all the difference for her. “I’m a single parent. I knew I couldn’t pay for school and not work, so this was definitely the best path for me.” Unlike traditional programs, these graduates don’t have to worry about finding a job after graduation. Every student is guaranteed a position within Singing River Health System. “They have a contract to work with us, and it’s really great,” said John Herron, a Surgical First Assistant and program educator. “It’s very difficult, just like a traditional school, so I’m very proud of the ones who made it to today.” Educators say the apprenticeship model not only benefits students but also helps meet Mississippi’s growing need for healthcare workers. Shannon said that the advantage sets the program apart. “Most jobs want you to already have experience when they hire you, and with this program, you’re getting that experience while you’re on the job,” Shannon said. Organizers hope the success of the academy encourages other hospitals across the state to adopt similar opportunities.2nd suspect in Pensacola Charlie Kirk vigil disturbance surrendersSprout Organics recalls some baby food for potential elevated levels of leadAlabama public health department watching closely as further budget cuts possibleUPDATE: Shots fired at deputy in Toulminville; 4 juvenile suspects in custody
