Two young siblings who disappeared from Ohio after their mother's mental health deteriorated were found safe in Iceland after a remarkable international journey. Authorities tracked the family across continents, eventually locating the children in a remote Icelandic village. The mother is hospitalized and will be extradited back to the U.S.
A pair of siblings who went missing from Ohio in October were found safe in an Iceland ic village this month. The two children, aged 8 and 9, were reported missing to Canton, Ohio police by a family member on October 25th. According to the missing persons report, the children vanished after their mother stopped taking her mental health medication. The 34-year-old woman allegedly 'abandoned' her apartment, and the children stopped attending school.
Investigators initially traced the children to Denver, Colorado, and subsequently learned that the woman and her children had traveled to London, England. The U.S. Marshals Service said that police then located them on the island of Jersey in the English Channel, over 200 miles south of London. The woman then allegedly took the children to a secluded fishing village in Iceland, more than 2,500 miles from Jersey. The village's name has not been disclosed, but local Icelandic authorities ultimately found the children at a motel in Reykjavik, the capital city. The children were reported safe upon their discovery and placed with Icelandic social services while awaiting handover to trusted family members. The mother has been hospitalized and will be returned to the U.S. upon her recovery. It remains unclear if she will face any charges.
