ANCHORAGE, Alaska - After months of searching, the last known missing dog from Kipnuk has finally been found and brought back to Anchorage, following the village’s evacuation after the destruction of former Typhoon Halong .
But this rescue story has a heartwarming twist that no one expected. The husky mix dog didn’t come home alone—she arrived with an incredible surprise: 11 newborn puppies, all less than a week old. The rescue was a true community effort. James Morris, who helped locate and care for the dog, described earning the mother’s trust and bringing her to safety during Kipnuk’s harsh winter. “Together with the help of our fellow local people and our local workforce, we located where the dog was at, started feeding her, earned her trust, and then brought her inside the last couple days ago,” Morris said. “It’s been really cold in Kipnuk. So, we picked her up and brought her in with her babies.” The Alaska State Veterinarian confirms that all 11 puppies are healthy and thriving under foster care at a local rescue organization. The mother and her litter will stay together for the crucial early weeks of development. “We want the puppies to stay with the mom for eight weeks, so they have time to be socialized with her, and then get into a new home,” State Veterinarian Sarah Coburn explained. The dog’s original owner, who lives in Anchorage, has been notified of the wonderful news. If they’re unable to care for the growing family, the rescue is ready to find the mother and all 11 puppies loving permanent homes.
