Derek Chauvin, a former Minneapolis police officer, faces charges of third-degree murder in connection with the death of George Floyd. The city of Minneapolis has agreed to pay $600,000 to settle a lawsuit filed by Patty Day, a woman who alleged that Chauvin used excessive force and wrongfully arrested her. Day, formerly employed by the Public Works Department, claimed that on January 17, 2020, she was stuck in the snow due to intoxication and personal difficulties.
Chauvin and his partner, Officer Ellen Jensen, responded to the scene. Day's lawsuit alleged that the officers forcibly removed her from her vehicle and threw her to the ground, causing injuries. The complaint further stated that Chauvin placed his knee on Day's back, mimicking his later actions during Floyd's arrest. A judge subsequently dismissed the drunken driving charge against Day, ruling that the officers lacked probable cause for the arrest and suppressing the blood alcohol test evidence.Day's attorney, Katie Bennett, expressed gratitude for the settlement, emphasizing that while no settlement can undo her client's experience, it holds the officers accountable.
