Mimi Xu is the DJ behind some of your favorite Fashion Week soundtracks. vogueworld
understands this all on a cellular level. As a DJ and performance artist, she works with designers around the world on fashion show soundtracks, but also designs sound installations for stores and collaborates with dancers, choreographers, and musicians on performance art pieces. Growing up, she admits she was “force fed music”—her father is acoustic architect Albert Xu, and she spent her childhood at classical concerts and piano conservatories, where she practiced for five hours a day.
Her self-proclaimed “eclectic tastes” mean that the mix could include everything from Bowie, Nick Cave, and Alice Coltrane to Igor Stravinsky. “I like to take my audience on a musical journey,” she says. “No duf-duf-duf one-dimensional sets for me. I’ll drop an old disco track, mix it into a weird electro-techno sound, slow it down to a hip-hop song and recharge with an edited, forgotten pop track—all seamlessly and manually cued.
