Mike White has proven his toughness and value to the Jets in an expedited fashion. NYJets | TakeFlight
snatched the reins of the starting role away from Zach Wilson, but White has done plenty to convince the team he deserves to hold onto that starting job.
Unlike last year’s situation in New York, when White took over for Wilson because of an injury, this year’s quarterback switch was intentional. Wilson, the No. 2 overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft, had been struggling to get the offense going consistently this season. After a particularly bad showing against the New England Patriots in Week 11 , head coach Robert Saleh decided to move forward with White under center.
Right away, White provided the spark that the New York offense had seemed to be missing all season with aover the Chicago Bears in Week 12. His 149.3 passer rating was the best by a Jets starting quarterback since Geno Smith in 2014, and he notably was able to get all of his weapons—particularly second-year receiver Elijah Moore—involved in the offense.
In the two weeks since, White’s performances have been more of the same. He hasn’t had quite as high a completion rate and has two interceptions to zero touchdowns in his last two games. What is still there, though, is the big-time throws, pocket poise, and the ability to spread the ball around that New York’s offense seemed to be missing when Wilson was under center.
In last week’s matchup with the Minnesota Vikings, the fifth-year quarterback was slotting throws into tight windows all game. Whether it was a short-to-intermediate throw over the middle or a deep pass toward the sideline, White was finding spaces in coverage and taking advantage of them with perfectly placed throws, even under pressure.
