The Crimson Tide will see an old friend on Saturday, when its former head coach visits Bryant-Denny Stadium.
It’s Shula’s first time returning to Tuscaloosa for a game since he was fired after the 2006 regular season ended with a loss in the Iron Bowl. He made his return to college football in 2024 as a senior offensive assistant for South Carolina, after coaching in the NFL from 2007-2023.
Shula largely works with the South Carolina quarterbacks. He’s most familiar with that position, having played it himself at Alabama, starting from 1984-1986. Shula took over the head job at Alabama in 2003, following the departure of Dennis Franchione to Texas A&M, and the brief tenure of Mike Price. He turned around a team in turmoil during his first three seasons leading his alma mater, culminating with a 10-2 2005 campaign that ended with a Cotton Bowl victory.
”The guy likes to hear himself talk and then doesn’t follow up on what he says,” Don Shula told the Miami Herald when Saban was hired at Alabama, referring to Saban’s infamous assertion that he was not leaving the Dolphins for Tuscaloosa.
