Tens of thousands of users experienced widespread disruptions accessing Microsoft Outlook, Microsoft 365, and other Microsoft services on Saturday. Microsoft identified the cause of the outage and implemented a fix, with a majority of users now reporting restored access.

Microsoft acknowledged late on Saturday that a majority of users were recovering from an outage that had previously affected tens of thousands of users. These users were reportedly unable to access their Outlook email accounts or other Microsoft 365 programs. The issue came to light around 3:30 p.m. ET when reports of disruptions to services like Microsoft Outlook , Microsoft Exchange, Microsoft Teams, Microsoft 365, and Microsoft Azure surged.

Downdetector, a platform that tracks online service outages, indicated that over 37,000 individuals reported an Outlook outage, while approximately 24,000 reported problems with Microsoft 365. Additionally, roughly 150 users reported issues accessing their Teams accounts. The outages were most concentrated in major cities like New York, Chicago, and Los Angeles, according to Downdetector data. Users turned to social media, particularly X, formerly known as Twitter, to express their frustration and concerns about widespread Microsoft service disruptions. In response to the growing number of reports, Microsoft 365 Status, the official account for Microsoft 365 service incidents, confirmed they were investigating the issue. They stated, 'We're investigating an issue in which users may be unable to access Outlook features and services.' Microsoft subsequently confirmed the potential root cause of the outage and took steps to reverse the 'impacting service update.' In an update posted on X, Microsoft 365 Status reassured users that they had entered a period of extended monitoring to ensure service stability and address any lingering effects on other Microsoft 365 services. They pledged to continue monitoring the situation until the impact on all services was fully resolved.
