that led to a multi-hour outage. While a newly announced mandatory two-factor authentication login requirement would not have prevented that kind of distributed denial of service attack, it will have a positive impact when it comes to protecting user data and identity.
The announcement refers to recent Microsoft research revealing that MFA can block more than 99.2% of account compromise attacks. Protecting Azure accounts with securely managed and phishing-resistant 2FA is, therefore, key. Microsoft has said it will be taking the following actions:Ensuring 100% of applications are protected with system-managed credentials.Adopting more fine-grained partitioning of identity signing keys and platform keys.
Phase one, starting in October, requires 2FA to be used when signing in to Azure portal, Microsoft Entra admin center and Intune admin center. This enforcement will be gradually rolled out to all tenants. Global admins should start receiving a 60-day notice from Microsoft starting August 15, containing the data of enforcement and the actions that are required of them.
It should be noted, however, that end users who are not logging into Azure portal, CLI or PowerShell, but are accessing apps and services, will not be required to use 2FA unless the owners of those services mandate it. “By enforcing MFA for Azure sign-ins, we aim to provide you with the best protection against cyber threats,” Microsoft said, “We appreciate your cooperation and commitment to enhancing the security of your Azure resources.”Our community is about connecting people through open and thoughtful conversations.
