A progressive Michigan Democrat running for U.S. Senate is under fire following the release of leaked audio where he discusses his strategy on addressing the death of Iran's Supreme Leader. The recording has sparked criticism from Republicans, conservatives, and others, raising questions about his approach to sensitive issues and his political affiliations. The candidate is also facing prior controversies.
A Michigan Democrat vying for a U.S. Senate seat is under fire following the release of leaked audio that appears to reveal his strategic approach to addressing the death of Iran 's former Supreme Leader Khamenei . The audio, reported by the Washington Free Beacon, allegedly captures Abdul El-Sayed , a progressive Democrat, discussing his team's strategy during a staff meeting. The context revolves around Khamenei 's death, which occurred amidst U.S. and Israeli military activity.
In the audio, El-Sayed allegedly stated, “I'm just gonna go straight to pedophilia, frankly,” as his response if questioned by a reporter. He further elaborated, “I'll just be like, ‘Pedophile president decides that he doesn't like the front page news, so he decides to take us into another war.’” Furthermore, El-Sayed purportedly referenced the significant Muslim population in Dearborn, Michigan, asserting, “I also want to remind you guys that there are a lot of people in Dearborn who are sad today. So, like, I just don't want to comment on Khamenei at all. Like, I don't think it's worth even touching that.”\The report immediately triggered a wave of criticism from Republican and conservative figures on social media. Mike Rogers, a Republican Senate candidate from Michigan, expressed his disapproval, stating that El-Sayed “continues to expose how extreme the Democrat party has become.” Rogers went on to contrast El-Sayed's alleged response with the importance of empathizing with victims of terrorism and anti-Semitic acts. Rogers specifically mentioned the victims of the Michigan synagogue attack, the thousands of Americans murdered by Iran, and victims of Iran-sponsored terrorism globally. Political analyst Josh Kraushaar from Fox News radio commented that the situation “speaks volumes about the level of extremism within the El-Sayed coalition.” Senator Bernie Moreno, a Republican, characterized the situation as “Beyond parody,” further emphasizing the perceived radical nature of El-Sayed's candidacy. The backlash also included strong reactions from other prominent conservative voices, such as Steve Guest and Nathan Brand, who also voiced their discontent on social media.\El-Sayed's campaign has responded to the report through a statement provided to the Washington Free Beacon by lawyers from the Sandler Reiff law firm. The statement clarified that the recording was obtained without the campaign’s authorization and without the knowledge that individuals were being recorded. The campaign indicated that it is considering its legal options against the person responsible for the recording. The incident comes at a crucial time for El-Sayed, as he is competing in the Michigan Democratic Senate primary on August 4th, with State Sen. Mallory McMorrow and Rep. Haley Stevens. El-Sayed has also faced prior controversy, including agreeing to campaign with Hasan Piker, a far-left streamer known for controversial statements. The Cook Political Report currently classifies the Senate race as a “toss up” as the November midterm elections approach. The situation highlights the challenges El-Sayed faces as he navigates the political landscape and the sensitivity surrounding issues related to international affairs, religious sentiment, and political strategy
