Mets acquired former Yankees reliever to start games
On the first day of pitchers and catchers, Holmes was already in good form, pitching three simulated innings in live batting practice. No other Mets starter threw a pitch on Wednesday. “The fact that on day one of pitchers and catchers, he’s already at three ups, that’s pretty impressive,” Mets manager Carlos Mendoza said.
“You got to give him credit because that shows all the work that he did as soon as we signed him, like I said, with the mindset that he was making that transition. So he knew he needed to get here and ready to go to face hitters.” The two-time All-Star saved a career-high 30 games with the Yankees last season. Since being traded by the Pittsburgh Pirates to New York in July of 2021, he has posted a 2.69 ERA over 220 outings. Holmes also led Major League Baseball in blown saves last season . After struggling to find consistency in his results all summer, he was bumped down into a set-up role, making way for Luke Weaver’s emergence in the closer spot. Though he’s never pitched more than 70 innings in a season, the Mets don’t have an innings goal for a 31-year-old right-hander in spring training. President of baseball operations David Stearns has intimated that he doesn’t believe in them, and Mendoza agrees. “We trust the process, we trust our guys all the measures that we do in the training room,” Mendoza said. “These guys, after every outing, after every time they touch the mound, they go through a lot of testing there and that’s how we make our decision, plus the feedback from the players as well.Ex-Mets infielder lands with new team Thank you for relying on us to provide the journalism you can trust.
