N.J. native was Manager of the Year in 1990
Jeff Torborg, shown as Marlins manager in 2002, talks to first base umpire Ron Kulpa. Torborg, a New Jersey native, has died at 83.
He retired as a player after the 1973 season, and began his managerial career with Cleveland in 1977, taking over mid-season whenwas fired. Torborg lasted parts of three seasons, and was a member of the Yankees coaching staff from 1979-88 before becoming the White Sox’ manager. A 10-year veteran of the Dodgers and Angels, Torborg caught Sandy Koufax's perfect game, Bill Singer's no-hitter and Nolan Ryan's first no-hitter.A year after leading the White Sox to an 87–75 record, Torborg signed a four-year, 1.7 million contract with the Mets. But the Mets went 70–92 in 1992, his first season in Flushing.
“Very sad to hear of the passing of former Mets manager Jeff Torborg. Extremely nice man with a good sense of humor. Upon seeing the busts of Mets Hall of Famers in Shea’s Diamond Club, he said, “They should have one of me. I was the biggest bust they ever had!” RIP.
