The New York Mets owner, Steve Cohen, acknowledged the possibility of Pete Alonso returning to the team in 2025, despite ongoing negotiations proving challenging. Recent reports suggest that Alonso's deal with the Toronto Blue Jays might be faltering due to a disagreement over deferred payments. This development could open the door for the Mets to re-engage with Alonso's camp.

New York Mets owner Steve Cohen acknowledged Saturday that, while the team was 'moving forward' with its annual offseason roster-building exercise with or without Pete Alonso , 'there's always a possibility' the free agent first baseman would be back in 2025. Recently, that possibility might have gotten a boost. According to Andy Martino of SNY, the Mets could potentially pivot back to negotiating with Alonso's camp after a hangup in talks between Alonso and the Toronto Blue Jays .

Writes Martino, 'talks were advancing last week between Alonso's camp and Toronto, league sources said. But a potential stumbling block there could have been deferred money, based on Toronto's heavily deferred agreement with outfielder Anthony Santander.' Santander is deferring more than half of the originally reported $92.5 million in his five-year contract, according to multiple reports. Reports that the Blue Jays were interested in signing Alonso accelerated last week. One Twitter/X user suggested that the Jays 'fumbled on the 10-yard line,' an analogy Martino deemed correct. Given that, it seems possible Blue Jays are insisting on deferring some of Alonso's salary, which might prompt Alonso's camp to balk. Cohen told fans at the Mets' 'Amazin' Day' event Saturday that he did not like the way negotiations were going with Alonso's agent, Scott Boras. 'I don't like what's being presented to us,' Cohen said. 'Maybe that changes. Certainly I'll always stay flexible. If it stays this way, I think we're going to have to get used to the fact that we're going to have to go forward with the existing players.' However, the Mets are reportedly still welcome to employing Alonso, who hit 34 home runs last season and has hit 226 homers since his 2019 Rookie of the Year campaign in Queens. They just are wary of the terms. According to Martino, Cohen and Mets president of baseball operations David Stearns 'are in agreement that it is unwise to venture too far past the top luxury tax threshold' of $301 million. After signing reliever Ryne Stanek Wednesday, the Mets' payroll projects to the $310 to $320 million range, per Martino, even without Alonso and the utility infielder they are seeking to add. Meanwhile, several other interested parties have apparently emerged looking to sign Alonso: rival agents. SportsNet's Ben Nicholson-Smith reported Wednesday on Twitter/X that MLB agents have recently been informed they cannot contact Pete Alonso — a typical reaction when agents suspect a player might be unhappy with their current representation.
