Mets owner Steve Cohen continues to stay aggressive in free agent market

Mets owner Steve Cohen re-engaged with Pete Alonso's camp shortly after his comments at Amazin Day. “I don’t like the negotiations,” a visibly angry Cohen said.

Like any good businessman, Cohen also understands that Alonso is a valuable piece the Mets would like to keep. As such, “no more than 48 hours” after making those comments, both parties re-engaged in talks, “Truly, it’s hard to know what to make of the ongoing saga involving the National League’s top home run hitter since he came into the league and one of the most prolific in the history of the franchise,” Heyman wrote. “But from my drama-free distance, it feels like Alonso desperately hopes to return while the Mets could go either way.”With the Mets’ current roster construction, they would be relying on infielder Mark Vientos to protect their $765 million investment in Juan Soto in the lineup.

Alonso is coming off of arguably his worst MLB season, in which he batted .240. His power numbers — a .788 slugging percentage behind 34 home runs and 88 RBIs — represent career lows for the slugger in a 162-game season.Vientos. Alonso’s 226 home runs rank second in baseball behind the Yankees’ Aaron Judge since his 2016 debut — and third in Mets franchise history. His 586 RBIs are first in baseball and sixth all-time in Mets franchise history.
