Mets' Francisco Alvarez is recovering from a fractured hamate

clubhouse has been strangely quiet recently. That’s because catcher Francisco Alvarez, who is often seen signing along to the music or joking around with teammates, has been on a rehab assignment since April 9.

On Saturday, Mets manager Carlos Mendoza provided an update on Alvarez, who’s been on the IL all season with a fractured hamate in his left hand. “I think he’s scheduled to catch nine innings today, maybe he’ll DH tomorrow, and then, as far as like from the medical staff, he’s gonna be clear," Mendoza told reporters. “So it’s now, do you need more at bats just to get your timing right or are you ready to come up and start playing big league games.”Alvarez is working on his timing at the plate. In six rehab games, he’s 4-for-22 between Single-A and Double-A. He’s 3-for-12 with a home run and three RBIs in his last three games in Double-A Binghamton. The Mets aren’t in any rush to call Alvarez up because his back-up, Luis Torrens, has been playing well. In 16 games, Torrens is batting .255 with a .733, including a big RBI double in the fifth inning in How does Mendoza envision splitting time between Alvarez and Torrens when Alvarez is finally activated off the IL? “They’re both going to play,” Mendoza said. “I gotta take care of Alvy too, I’m not gonna run him to the ground, and is playing well. That’s a luxury to have, when you got two guys that you feel good about your chances, it doesn’t matter who’s in the lineup. ... “The schedule, will dictate a lot of that. Whether you’re playing a lot of games in a row, day game night games, you know. So all of that factors into the decision making. But i could see both of them the playing.”Mets — and their fans — react to Juan Soto snapping 0-for-12 skidThank you for relying on us to provide the journalism you can trust.
