A winter weather advisory went into effect in the Sierra Nevada at 5 a.m. Wednesday and will last until 8 a.m. Thursday.
A second straight day of rain in the Bay Area is expected to bring more precipitation than the first one, the National Weather Service said. The second of back-to-back rain systems is expected to bring a bit more precipitation to the Bay Area on Wednesday than it did on Tuesday, according to the National Weather Service.
El Niño is on the way: What that means for California’s weatherWhat does the March heat wave mean for fire season? “We are in between systems right now,” NWS meteorologist Nicole Sarment said Wednesday morning. “But there is going to be more rain than we had the first day. The first one didn’t amount to much but it was certainly more than what we thought it would be.” The rain — the first the Bay Area has received since March 2 — won’t last much longer. Sarment said a dry, warming pattern will begin Thursday and carry through the weekend. Along with it will come a flow of air that moves toward the ocean and not from it, an element often present in long periods of heat. A trailing cold front from a system descending from the Gulf of Alaska near the Canadian border and Washington is likely to power Wednesday’s rain. Sarment said the higher elevation areas along the northern coast could receive a much of an inch of rain from it and that other parts of the region may receive anywhere from a quarter-inch to a half-inch.Its effect is expected to be felt in the Sierra Nevada, too. The weather service said about 6-to-12 inches of snow are expected along the Sierra crest and perhaps 1-3 inches may in the lower elevations near Lake Tahoe. The waves on Lake Tahoe are expected to be between 3-6 feet high, and wind gusts may reach 100 mph at the ridge tops and 45-55 mph in the lower elevations. The weather service issued a winter weather advisory at 5 a.m. Wednesday that will stay into effect until 8 a.m. Thursday. The rain Tuesday came from a system that approached the region closer to the Central Coast. By 7 a.m. Wednesday, the weather service measured four-tenths of an inch of rain on Mount Hamilton and a quarter-inch or rain in Ben Lomond and Mt. Umunhum in the Santa Cruz Mountains. One of the storm’s cells also hovered over downtown Oakland, where the weather service recorded three-tenths of an inch. About two-tenths of an inch fell in Concord, five-hundredths of an inch fell at the San Francisco International Airport and .02 inches fell at San Jose Mineta International Airport.Exclusive: Environmental group signs deal to buy Golden Gate Fields horse track with plans to create huge new East Bay waterfront park Exclusive: Environmental group signs deal to buy Golden Gate Fields horse track with plans to create huge new East Bay waterfront parkMiss Manners: They won't even set a menu until the guests arriveHarriette Cole: I told the bride no, and now she's chilly toward meAsking Eric: My boss resents me because I won't look the other wayBody in truck feared to be missing San Jose man, foul play explored
