MetroHealth recognized former hospital director William Andrews through a ceremony Monday at the Glick Center on Scranton Road.
CLEVELAND , Ohio - Andrews was the first Black hospital administrator in the state of Ohio, and served as MetroHealth’s director from 1964 to 1981. Williams passed away in 2006.
As director, he oversaw the groundbreaking of MetroHealth’s iconic twin towers. He’s also remembered for his administrative innovations, such as a centralized dictating system for health professionals and the implementation of pneumatic tubes to assist with care. Dr. Richard Fratianne says Andrews came to the hospital at a time of severe need: “City Hospital was kind of a dump...it was the old, old style, way out of date hospital.”
Andrews was also remembered for the way he cared for his staff: “When you walked down the hall, it wasn’t ‘hey, how are you doing,’ it was ‘Hey, Dr. Frat, how are you? How’s the family?' He knew me!” The ceremony concluded with the dedication of a hospital art piece to Andrews. “Strong Like Bull, Black Like Crow” depicts a man carrying a child on his shoulders—the art made of hundreds of sheets of comic book clips. The Andrews family now hope the gesture can solidify his legacy for years to come.
