The Washington Metro is undertaking a modernization project to improve the reliability of 27 elevators across several stations. Customers are advised that shuttle services will be available at affected stations.

Metro is modernizing 27 elevators across more than a dozen locations starting today at the Archives-Navy Memorial-Penn Quarter Station. Elevator work will also take place at Benning Road Station starting February 17 and Dupont Circle Station starting in March. Customers with accessibility needs who use elevators can still get to these stations via a shuttle at nearby stations.

For Archives, a free shuttle service will be provided between Archives-Navy Memorial-Penn Quarter Station to either Gallery Place or L’Enfant Plaza, as requested. The shuttle stop will be located on 7th Street NW. At Benning Road, free shuttle service will be provided from Benning Road Station to Capitol Heights or Stadium-Armory stations, as requested. The shuttle stop will be located inside the Kiss & Ride Lot, near the elevator. At Dupont Circle, the Connecticut Avenue and Q Street NW elevator will be closed. Free shuttle service will be provided from Dupont Circle to either Woodley Park or Farragut North stations, as requested. The shuttle stop at Dupont Circle will be located on Connecticut Ave NW, approximately 100 feet south of Q Street. This project will improve elevator reliability by replacing and upgrading all major components, including a new passenger cab, controls, motors, and safety devices. This rehabilitation is part of Metro’s regular elevator maintenance program, which includes monthly and annual maintenance on all 350+ elevators and major rehabilitation work every 10-15 years
