According to an alert sent out just before 6 p.m., those issues were causing trains on numerous lines to be delayed at their originating stations, and also caused some trains to halt on the tracks.Train No. 115 on the North Central Service line, scheduled to depart at 5:35 p.m., was being held at Union Station due to the PTC issues. Metra Electric Line trains were being delayed by up to 40 minutes due to the PTC issues, according to the agency. Some trains on the Milwaukee District North line were also delayed by 40 minutes, with a train held at Union Station that had been scheduled to depart at 5:18 p.m., PTC systems are"designed to prevent train-to-train collisions, over-speed derailments, incursions into established work zones, and movements of trains through switches left in the wrong position."The system covers nearly 58,000 route miles of freight and passenger railroads, and impacts all commuter rail services and Amtrak, according to the DOT.
