Vogue reveals the 2026 Met Gala dress code will be “Fashion is Art,” reflecting the “Costume Art” exhibit's exploration of the dressed body through the Met's extensive art collection. The exhibit will feature nearly 400 objects spanning 5,000 years of art history. Co-chairs will include Beyoncé, Nicole Kidman, Venus Williams, and Anna Wintour.
Vogue revealed that the annual event, which takes place on the first Monday of May, will have a “ Fashion is Art ” dress code . In the announcement via social media on Monday, February 23, the publication shared that “the directive perfectly reflects the ethos of ‘Costume Art ,’ which explores the ‘centrality of the dressed body’ through depictions and interpretations of the human form in the Met’s extensive collection.
” The exhibit is made up of “nearly 400 objects” that “pair garments from the Costume Institute with paintings, sculptures, and other works spanning some 5,000 years of art history.” Vogue added that the dress code encourages guests to “consider the many ways that designers use the body as their blank canvas.” Andrew Bolton, who is the Costume Institution’s curator, told Vogue, “What connects every curatorial department and what connects every single gallery in the museum is fashion, or the dressed body.” He added, “It’s the common thread throughout the whole museum, which is really what the initial idea for the exhibition was.” In November 2025, Vogue announced the theme of the event. Bolton, 59, explained that the “Costume Art” theme was going to be “a huge moment” for the museum. “It will be transformative for our department, but I also think it’s going to be transformative to fashion more generally,” he said.Body types will be “loosely divided,” according to Vogue, noting there will be three categories derived from themes seen in art: the classical and nude; the anatomical; and the underrepresented, such as the pregnant and the aging body. While the guest list is sealed until May 4 when stars make their way up the famous steps of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City, Vogue shared that the gala’s co-chairs will include Beyoncé, Nicole Kidman, Venus Williams, and, as always, Anna Wintour. Fans will also be happy to see the stars serving as co-chair of the 2026 Met Gala Host Committee, including Zoë Kravitz, Sabrina Carpenter, Doja Cat, Alex Consani, Misty Copeland, Elizabeth Debicki, Lena Dunham, Sam Smith, Teyana Taylor and Lisa. Designer Anthony Vaccarello, Gwendoline Christie, Paloma Elsesser, Lauren Wasser, Anna Weyant, A’ja Wilson, Yseult and Vogue’s new editor in chief Chloe Malle are also on the committee. On Monday, the publication dropped more names of the host committee: Adut Akech, Angela Bassett, Sinéad Burke, Rebecca Hall, Aimee Mullins, Tschabalala Self, Amy Sherald and Chase Sui Wonders. The gala’s lead sponsors and honorary chairs are also big names — Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sánchez Bezos will make their mark as honorary chairs. Because the theme and dress code are focused on “the indivisible connection between our bodies and the clothes we wear,” per Vogue, Us Weekly is expecting celebs to show off their curves in naked dresses at the event. Some of the hottest sheer looks at the Met Gala throughout the years include Kim Kardashian's wet look at the 2019 soirée, Rita Ora’s barely-there moment in 2024 and Emily Ratajkowski’s nipple-baring dress that same year. Greta Lee also gave fans a glimpse of her figure in a sheer white dress in 2024, as did Emma Chamberlain, Janella Monáe and Jennifer Lopez.
