Shops and restaurants are offering special deals to veterans, current military personnel and sometimes first responders on Memorial Day.
Monday, May 30 marks Memorial Day, a public holiday where Americans recognize the contribution veterans and current serving military members make to the country.
Some shops and restaurants are also recognizing this contribution by giving special deals to veterans, current military personnel and sometimes first responders onDr. Aldona Sendzikas, Associate Professor, History Department and Co-Director, Program in American Studies, Western University, notes the tradition originates with memorials to the fallen from the Civil War.:"In the U.S., there are two annual holidays created specifically to honor members of the armed services.
"Veterans' Day, held on November 11th, honors all servicemen and servicewomen, including those who lost their lives, retired service members, and those currently in active service. "Memorial Day, traditionally observed on the last Monday in May of every year, specifically honors those members of the military who gave their lives while serving the nation."Sendzikas said:"Pro sports games played on Memorial Day weekend usually include pre-game tributes to the military, television stations often broadcast war-related films throughout the weekend, and many retailers advertise 'Memorial Day sales'.
