With five dozen family members and friends looking on, Eastlake High/San Diego State alum Casey Schmitt homers for first major league hit in debut with Giants
Former SDSU assistant coach Joe Oliveira was among them. Oliveira recruited Schmitt out of Eastlake High in 2017.
Oliveira posted to his social media account a photo with Schmitt during batting practice, tweeting, in part, “Casey Schmitt is a big leaguer! When you get that text, you drop everything and book a flight.” “He was calm and smiling like usual,” Oliveira said. “I got the feeling that he knew he belonged and knew he was prepared for this.”The group included four generations of family members, ranging from an infant nephew to an 84-year-old grandmother.“He came out in full uni a few minutes and hugged every single one of them,” Oliveira said. “It was so cool to see him so humble and appreciative that they made the effort to be there.
He got his feet wet in the low minors in 2021, then he moved rapidly through three different levels of pro ball last season. Over 127 games, Schmitt batted .287 with 20 homers and 76 RBIs.
