In his first career MLB game, Casey Schmitt went 2-for-4 with a home run as he led the Giants to a 4-1 win over the Nationals
SAN FRANCISCO — He was an instant hero, and the Oracle Park crowd sent him off as one.
At that point, Schmitt had already put together an MLB debut to remember, belting his first career home run, a 420-foot shot to deep left-center as he led the Giants to a 4-1 win over the Nationals.He saw his first and only bit of action in the field in the third inning, when Joey Meneses smoked a grounder right at him and Schmitt fielded it cleanly, then tossed it to second for Thairo Estrada to turn a smooth double play.
Among those dancing in the stands were his parents, Dan and Tina, and more than 40 others who flew from his native San Diego to take in an unforgettable night. It shouldn’t have been lost on anybody that Schmitt became the first Giants shortstop to hit a homer for his first MLB hit in his first MLB game since Brandon Crawford, the 36-year-old veteran who is currently on the injured list.
