Author lizzydgoodman captured the frenetic spirit of a generation in her book, 'Meet Me in the Bathroom.' Now, with the arrival of a new documentary, she helps to retell the story of a bygone era of New York City:
Let’s talk about how the documentary took shape with the directors, Lovelace and Southern. With access to so much great archival footage, did you always know the book would have a supplemental documentary?
The coolest part of this process for me was getting to see what happens when you put a serious film archive team behind the project for years to find people’s stuff and make use of it. This film is also very much a documentary made in the COVID age. Mostly, I think it was an advantage because it really made it this detective-type research project and people were home.
A lot of the footage you see in the film is from the bands’ personal archives, which is pretty rad. It’s so exciting because this is the first generation of people who could have had this level of stuff sitting under their beds.
I love this question because it presumes a level of self-awareness that gives me way more credit than is due. The fact that it has turned out to be the case that this question would be asked itself still feels like a miracle to me. I’m like, Dude, I think I pulled it off. I think the book worked. Someone is asking me how I knew it would be a good idea, I think that means it was a good idea!
