Solon Fire Rescue will host its annual open house Oct. 9 at Fire Station 2, giving residents a chance to meet firefighters, tour the station, and enjoy hands-on family activities.
SOLON , Ohio — Solon Fire Rescue will welcome residents to its annual open house Oct. 9, offering families an inside look at the department and a night of hands-on fun. The free event runs from 6 to 8 p.
m. at Fire Station 2, 6320 SOM Center Road. Parking will be available at Solon City Hall or Park Place. Lt. Joe Eisenhuth, who has coordinated the event for many years, said the open house provides a chance for residents and firefighters to connect outside of emergency situations. “We interact with our residents in all types of different ways throughout the year. The open house, however, provides a unique opportunity to interact with our residents as friends and neighbors in a fun and educational way,” Eisenhuth said. “We learn about them and they in turn, learn about us and all the different ways that we are able to assist in their time of need.” Families can explore the fire station, meet firefighters and paramedics, and take part in a variety of interactive activities. Eisenhuth said several features are always a crowd favorite. “Spraying the fire hose is always a hit with kids, and adults too,” he said. “We will also have station tours, apparatus equipment displays, an inflatable obstacle course, and giant bubbles to be made!” Throughout the evening, residents will have opportunities to talk with first responders and learn more about their day-to-day work. “The residents can talk to our firefighters and paramedics about their shift schedules, challenging emergency calls, training routines and the general shift routine in between responding to emergencies,” Eisenhuth said.“They can sit in the trucks, hold and look over the equipment, walk around the station and talk to our personnel about the training they have to be able to assist in various types of emergencies,” Eisenhuth said. A new addition to this year’s open house will focus on everyday fire prevention. Eisenhuth said the department plans to highlight lithium-ion battery safety, a topic that has become increasingly important as these batteries power more household devices. “We will have a display to talk about lithium-ion battery safety. These batteries power the things we use in our daily lives, so it is a good topic to discuss,” he said. Eisenhuth hopes residents leave the event with a better understanding of the people behind the uniforms. “I hope our residents get an understanding of the dedication, integrity and teamwork of our personnel, and a sense of our readiness to assist in their time of need,” he said. Light refreshments will be provided, and children can enjoy making giant bubbles and exploring more fun activities throughout the evening.
