A new study suggests that certain foods commonly found in the Mediterranean diet could help reduce the risk of heart attacks and strokes. The research team focused on six plants from the Mediterranean region known for their antioxidant and cardiovascular protective effects. Results showed that the bioactive compounds in these foods could be helpful in treating atherosclerosis, a condition that contributes to heart disease.

“All of them originate from the Mediterranean region and hold significant cultural and traditional importance in these countries, as well as notable antioxidant and cardiovascular protective effects,” the team wrote.Results of the analysis showed that the bioactive compounds within these relatively common kitchen items could be helpful in the treatment of atherosclerosis, which is the build-up of plaque in arteries that causes them to thicken and harden.
The researchers also pointed out that the combination of these compounds could create a “matrix effect when taken in tandem, which could either increase or diminish their effectiveness.
