250 volunteers with Meals on Wheels Central Texas distributed 3,000 meals to seniors in need on Christmas Eve. Volunteers shared the impact of their service, highlighting the importance of companionship and support during the holiday season.
Includes: Williamson, Travis, Milam, Lee, Fayette, Bastrop, and Caldwell Counties.Hail up to 2'Wind up to 65 mphIsolated tornado threatChristmas Eve is here and the dinner preps for tomorrow’s holiday are already beginning, but some in the city don’t have a meal for tomorrow, or at least they wouldn’t without the help of some 250 volunteers with Meals on Wheels Central Texas. “I thought this mission of this organization was what I was looking for, and it is,” said volunteer Lucia Dodson.
“I've been with Meals on Wheels 20 years, going on my 21 years, and so I've been volunteering since day one,” she said. Dodson was inspired after seeing her mother-in-law in need. Dodson threw herself into community service. On Tuesday, Dodson was one of 250 or more volunteers helping to distribute 3,000 meals to seniors like Hilda Garcia in the community. “I love Meals on Wheels. I’m so grateful to be in the program. I love having them come and deliver my food, and I love the chit chats,” said Garcia.“I think of her as family. I really do,” said Dodson. Meals on Wheels Central Texas Chief Operating Officer Jake Peters says the power of a knock can change the outlook of someone’s day, especially this holiday season. “It's that smile on the other side of the door for our neighbors as we deliver the meal that's so important during this holiday season, as we know that isolation can happen for those that might not have families,” he said. Tuesday was the last day of deliveries this week but these meals will last through the weekend. Service will begin again next Monday
