Mayoral instability: Only three mayors have survived since 2021
When Buffalo City in the Eastern Cape gets a new mayor soon, only three of the country's eight metro councils will still have the mayors who were appointed after the previous municipal election.
In addition, one of the remaining three mayors, the DA's Tania Campbell in Ekurhuleni, may soon lose her post after the multiparty coalition that governs the council with a minority recently lost the posts of Speaker and chief whip. The party's rural support is quite secure and can get about 30% of the vote. The metros must deliver the balance to get it to 50%, says Venter.
