And apparently there’s plenty more to come - including every future Warner Bros film
Max, the forgettably named streaming love child of HBO Max and Discovery+, has launched today, carrying with it the hopes of its creators that combining the wares of two such heavy streaming hitters will help to give both the studios involved and consumers a little more stability and certainty in an increasingly turbulent and fractured streaming world.
While we’ve long known that Max was launching today, though, it wasn’t previously known that its creators were planning to celebrate Max’s launch by massively increasing the amount of 4K-resolution content the service carries. According to a statement by Sudheer Sirivara of Global Technology Platform, Warner Bros. Discovery, Max has launched packing more than 1,000 films and TV episodes in 4K resolution. That amounts to around eight times as much 4K content as the previous HBO Max service carried, and includes such tentpole titles astrilogy, The Last Of Us, and the entire Matrix series.
Max hasn’t decided to suddenly unleash a relative frenzy of 4K content purely out of the goodness of its picture quality-loving heart, it should be said. Naturally we’re expected to pay for our 4K TV privilege, as Max’s pricing structure introduces a top Ultimate tier costing $20 a month that includes among its unique attractions support for 4K video quality. So it makes sense to tempt consumers to take this highest tier subscription by offering as much 4K content as possible.
