An influential political consultant for Alabama Power has financial ties to three news organizations in the state that gave glowing coverage to the powerful utility while damaging the company’s opponents, according to a report by NPR and Floodlight.

Matrix LLC, the Montgomery-based political consulting firm that boasts Alabama Power as a longtime client, paid $900,000 to six media organizations in Alabama and Florida, including Yellowhammer News, Alabama Today and Alabama Political Reporter in Alabama, according to theA spokesperson for Alabama Power’s parent company, Southern Company, declined to comment.
“As an individual who distrusts both the political left and right, I have grown weary of Dunn and his assistant, as well as the whole idea that Alabama utilities are a vast conspiracy against the environment and the people,” he continued.“Mostly everything was all made up,” he said. “You get to thinking, ‘Why are they attacking me?’ I’m just telling the truth and trying to do what’s right for the people.
Britt told the outlets that APR’s financial relationship with Matrix involved advertising, although he also acknowledged his reporters were paid by Matrix to do research for the firm, saying “we have to make money.”The conservative website runs the Facebook page of the Alabama Free Market Alliance, which posts items attacking renewable energy. Alabama Free Market Alliance received $100,000 from Matrix in 2014, according to federal tax records, the report stated.
