The Matanuska-Susitna Borough Assembly is set to debate several proposed changes to borough election law, including a resolution prohibiting the use of paper-counting machines and updates to residency rules for Assembly members.
The Matanuska-Susitna Borough Assembly is set to debate proposed changes to borough election law at a meeting on Tuesday. Among the most significant proposals is a resolution that would prohibit the use of paper-counting machines during the ballot tallying process. The resolution, co-sponsored by Assembly members Dmitri Fonov and Ron Bernier, aims to address concerns raised by citizens and election officials about the use of these machines.
Proponents argue that hand-counting ballots would enhance transparency and accuracy, while opponents contend that the machines are essential for efficiently processing large volumes of ballots. The proposed changes also include updates to residency rules for Assembly members. Currently, any member who moves out of their district is required to resign. The new measure would clarify that members who move out of the borough entirely would also forfeit their seats, while those who move to a different district within the borough could continue serving. This update was prompted by the recent resignation of former Assembly member Rob Yundt, who moved to a bordering district and was unaware of the borough's residency requirements. The Assembly will also consider a series of technical updates to borough election law, including allowing election officials to begin counting early voting ballots before polls close on Election Day and increasing the word limit for candidate statements in the borough election pamphlet. Public hearings on these ordinances will be held during the Tuesday meeting, providing an opportunity for residents to voice their opinions and engage in the discussion surrounding these proposed changes
