The Matanuska-Susitna Borough Assembly unanimously voted to ban all new mobile home parks, aiming to establish a new oversight process for future developments.
The Matanuska-Susitna Borough Assembly voted to ban all new mobile home parks, regardless of how the homes are installed. Assembly members said they plan to introduce legislation next year that would create a path for new parks, provided they are subject to a special oversight process. The current ban applies to developments with three or more mobile homes on a 40,000-square-foot lot outside the city limits of Palmer , Wasilla and Houston. It does not affect existing mobile home parks.
The ban was approved unanimously. A previous change, proposed by former Assembly member Rob Yundt, eliminated a longstanding public hearing requirement for proposed mobile home parks and instead blocked most new developments. However, this change created a loophole: parks set to include mobile homes installed on permanent foundations and meeting certain plumbing standards required no special oversight beyond the same administrative permit used for duplexes and other multifamily developments. The new rule approved Tuesday closes this loophole by stating “mobile home parks are prohibited.” It is designed to completely ban new mobile home parks until a public hearing and oversight process can be developed, said Assembly member Stephanie Nowers, who proposed the change and whose district includes Palmer
