A group of men met a neighbor in Cleveland at a chain-link fence that bordered the two properties to ask him to stop firing an AR-15. Then, tragedy ensued.

San Jacinto County Sheriff Greg Capers talks to the press April 29, at the scene where a shooter went into a neighbors home and killed five people.Sonia Argentina Guzman Taibot grew up without a reliable home. She left her village in Honduras with a plan to help her mother and younger siblings secure some land and build a house.

Daniel’s 6-week-old brother was sleeping in a car seat nearby when the next-door neighbor began firing his AR-15 semi-automatic rifle in the adjoining front yard, according to Ramiro. The four men, all preparing for a big day of work ahead of them, decided they’d try to intervene. They didn’t know the neighbor well; they’d only exchanged pleasant greetings with the woman who lived with him, Ramiro said.

Ramiro and the two other men — including Casarez and Casarez’s uncle Jeffri Rivera — stood about four feet behind Wilson, who was at the chain-link fence that bordered the two properties. Oropeza appeared drunk, Ramiro said, and he was firing shots into the air. They asked if he could move away. The men came back to the house. Oropeza then followed them inside with his rifle. Ramiro said maybe 10 or 20 minutes passed between Sonia’s first 911 call and the time Oropeza breached the property line and came in shooting.

Ramiro even called his aunt a few blocks away, from inside the closet, asking her to make more calls. Ramiro also kept trying in hopes he’d get a new dispatcher. He recalled, in anguish, when one told him the cops were already there. He said something like,"Then why can I still hear them killing my family?"

A man who lived nearby and a few of his friends and family members dropped off sunflowers near the front door of the Guzman family home.
