More than half the people Mary's Place serves are children. Shelter workers understand the importance of providing warmth, love, and a place to play.
When Marronica Rines sits down to play with her 3-year-old son Carter, it might seem ordinary and routine. One room away, her 11-year-old son Cameron plays a video game. This very normal-sounding family setting is quite special.
"It was tough on them. They're having a hard time trying to adjust," Rines said. "They're kind of like having some behavioral issues, some depression, and things like that." "Kids can just be kids," said Mary's Place CEO Dominique Alex. "I think it's really important in your journey of, you know if you've had those traumas, of really having time where you can just be a kid. Kids deserve that, and that's really what helps them thrive."
"Kids Club helped Cameron and Carter kind of like open up, you know?" Rines said. "Coming from a rough situation where children were pretty much in an adult situation, to help them step back to just be a kid again."
